The Kilimanjaro Responsible Trekking Organization (KRTO), established in 2020, is a legally registered Tanzanian not-for-profit organization. We are dedicated to improve the working conditions and welfare of the porters who make climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro possible for thousands of climbers every year.
Our mission is to improve the working conditions of the porters on Kilimanjaro, promoting ethical climbing practices, ensuring porters receive fair wages, proper attire, and adequate shelter throughout their expeditions. KRTO is not a porter membership organization, or a tour operating business, and we do not collect any fees from porters or climbing companies.
KRTO is an initiative and financed by the International Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based out of Boulder, Colorado in the United States whose mission is to support an ethical mountain trekking culture by promoting social, economic and environmental responsibility. In Tanzania IMEC support the Kilimanjaro Responsible Trekking Organization (KRTO).
KRTO has been focusing its efforts to help transform the impact of tourism on Mount Kilimanjaro through a diversity of projects:
Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project – KPAP
Kilimanjaro Environmental Care Awareness – KECA
Community Empowerment and Development – CED
